Parquet flooring is a traditional and classic style of wood flooring, characterised by geometric mosaics of squares, triangles and lozenges.
The style has grown increasingly popular in recent years, as people look for a timeless feel to a modern home, or as part of a renovation to an old property.
Is parquet flooring real wood?
Traditionally, parquet flooring was made from 100% solid wood, but these days engineered wood is also an option. Whereas solid wood blocks are made from a single piece of timber, engineered wood is made up of several layers of different wood types, with the top layer being the visible layer.
It is often less prone to changes in moisture and heat, and can be less expensive, so engineered wood is an option worth considering.
New wood blocks vs reclaimed blocks
If you choose solid wood blocks for your floor, you also have the choice of either new wood or “reclaimed” wood.
The difference between new and reclaimed wood flooring is whether the wood is from new trees or has been used for another purpose already.
Further down this page, you’ll see a number of examples of our parquet floors. You’ll notice we often work with reclaimed hardwoods. They’ve become a popular choice amongst our clients, as they are more eco-friendly than new wood, and reclaimed wood is usually harder due to pressures it has already sustained. Reclaimed wood also has a previous life and sometimes a story to go with it.
